From 1967 to 1975, a group of Swedish journalists traveled to the United States to record, observe and report on the burgeoning Black Power movement. Thirty years later, this rich collection of rare 16mm footage was found languishing in the basement of a Swedish television station. With the help of actor and activist Danny Glover (who co-produced), director Göran Hugo Olsson has transformed this extraordinary archive into a provocative mosaic chronicling the evolution of the influential movement.

Chock-full of never-before-seen footage of Civil Rights leaders like Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Huey P. Newton and Eldridge Cleaver, this documentary provides unprecedented new insight to the often controversial legacy of Black Power. Olsson’s juxtaposition of historical material with insightful present-day commentary from artists and activists like Harry Belafonte, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Angela Davis, Kathleen Cleaver and Sonia Sanchez emerges as a fresh perspective on the history of Black Power in America. An evocative soundtrack with original music by Questlove (DJ and drummer for The Roots) and Om’Mas Keith adds contemporary energy to the historical context. Told through the curious and concerned eyes of Swedish journalists, The Black Power Mixtape 1967-1975’s unique point of view reminds us that the human-rights issues fought over in the turbulent ’60s and ’70s still endure in societies all over the world.
