Naguib Mahfouz – Man of Cinema
The first film by director Tawfik Saleh, Fools’ Alley is considered one of the most important Egyptian films of the ‘50s – a success very much dependent on a story by Naguib Mahfouz. In an archetypal Egyptian neighborhood, Taha works hard to put aside enough money to marry his beloved Khadija, but when the necessary funds suddenly become available there is an unexpected turn of events. The life of the entire neighborhood is turned upside down and the true colors of its inhabitants are revealed.

Daniel holds many jobs, but the one that truly defines him is his role as caregiver for his wife, Alejandra. As they embark on a new life as farmers in the countryside, Alejandra’s illness slowly puts her husband’s love and patience to the test. Through this couple’s deceptively simple story, Alejandro Fernández Almendras – whose Huacho showed at the Festival in 2009 – introduces us to the world of rural Chile.View More

Wild Strawberries

Director: Ingmar Bergman

Spotlight on Sweden
A 78-year-old widower, an egotistical professor and an icy-cold grouch, Isak Borg is forced to reevaluate his life during a long car ride across Sweden when the hitchhikers he picks up trigger daydreams and nightmares of his own troubled past. In 1957, while Ingmar Bergman was riding a career high but reeling in his personal life, Wild Strawberries arrived as one of the most poignant expressions of a man reflecting on his own life and mortality ever captured on film.
